Neymar Faced Trial Just Weeks before Qatar World Cup; Denies the Allegations.
Brazilian football star Neyamar Jr. went on trial in Spain over accusations of transfer irregularities to Barcelona almost a decade ago. The high-profile trial began in Barcelona on Monday.
DIS, a private Brazilian firm, accused Neymar and his father (also Neymar’s agent) of orchestrating unofficial payments to avoid the share of DIS in 2013.
The company owned forty per cent of Neymar’s playing rights when he was in Santos. Later, he joined Paris Saint-Germain with a record transfer fee of 222 million euros in 2017.
Alongside Neymar, nine other defendants are on trial for fraud charges. Neymar’s parents, Nadine Goncalves and Neymar da Silva, Ex-president of the Brazilian club Santos, Odilio Rodrigues and Ex-president of the Barcelona, Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell are the prime suspects in the case.
DIS implored five years of jail for the player and executives of Barcelona. According to the officials of Barcelona, the transfer fee was 57.1 million euros, of which it paid 40 million euros to NN company (Neymar and his father’s joint venture) and the remaining 17.1 million euros to Santos.
DIS received a lump sum of 6.8 million euros as a share-out. But the prosecutors estimated the tranfer amount to be around 82 million euros.
Neymar, obliged to attend the trial, was seen in sunglasses and a black suit. He waved to the reporters at 9:45 am as he reached the Provincial Court of Barcelona with his parents. He testified in court, repelling all the allegations against him.
He stated that all the legally bound documents he signed, were under his father’s supervision and he didn’t inspect them personally. He spent a couple of hours in the session. The judges shifted the next date on request to avoid clashing with PSG matches and hampering his commitments.
The trial is expected to last through the end of October. If the court does not permit him to miss one or two court sessions next month, he might be dropped from the Brazilian side of the World Cup starting on 21 November.
What if Neymar is Found Guilty?
If Neymar gets a conviction, it could be two years of imprisonment for him and his father for corruption charges. Alongside, he could potentially face a penalty of ten million euros fine.
His mother could face a one-year sentence, whereas Barcelona’s executive officers could be behind the bar for five years and face a ten million euros penalty for fraud and corruption charges. Santos’s former president could also face a three-year of imprisonment.
