Southgate’s team kicked off the tournament with an astounding score of 6-2 over the Iranian side in Doha on 21st November. Throughout the ninety minutes, the Three Lions dominated the game, where Iran lost their main goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand early in the game due to a head injury.
Jude Bellingham scored the first goal through a perfect cross by his teammate Luke Shaw at 35 minutes. Before halftime, it was already a 3-0 lead thanks to Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling. It was the first time when two sides were playing each other. England has shown off for the 17th consecutive World Cup in a row.
In the 8th minute, while saving the goal from a free kick, Beiranvard clashed with Iranian defender Majid Hosseini. It left him with a concussion forcing him to leave the field on a stretcher. Hossein Hosseini took his place from there.
The first goal came when unmarked Bellingham converted Shaw’s cross into the penalty box before 10 minutes of halftime. Saw scored from a corner through Maguire’s pass in the 45th minute. In the extra minutes of the first forty-five, England hit again with Sterling’s crazy volley to pretty much wrap up the game.
After halftime, Iran has already made three substitutions. Despite these changes, in the 62nd minute, Hosseini’s poor clearance was punished by Saka again to increase the lead further. Mehdi Taremi’s shot in 65 minutes passed Pickford to pull back the Iranian side.
Later on, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish put the final nail in the coffin. Both of them came to the pitch as substitutes. Just before the end, Taremi converted an easy penalty into the score, but all the damage had been done by then. It was just a formality till the referee called off the match.
Though Iran lost the game significantly, it won the hearts of millions of people. They stand in solidarity with all the women encountering oppression by the state regime amidst months-long nationwide protests in Iran. They declined to sing their national anthem to show support for the protestsq throughout Iran.
England has begun its quest with a huge win. They will be clashing with the USA on the 26th of November and with Wales on the 30th of November. In contrast, Iran will face those sides on the 25th and 30th of November after this devastation.
However, a concern will be itching for Gareth Southgate as Harry Maguire seemed to suffer from an injury in the latter half.
